The University of Georgia offers many outstanding programs for students to live and work in Washington, D.C. while earning academic credit. The following internship and fellowship programs provide exceptional opportunities for students to pursue their academic and professional goals in our nation’s capital.


Office of Government Relations Federal Internship

Staff from the Office of Government Relations pose in Sanford Stadium during the Federal Staff Retreat in 2023.Each semester, one selected student will work with the Federal Relations team to advocate for UGA’s institutional priorities with federal stakeholders. Responsibilities include attending and reporting on congressional committee hearings, assisting with communications and events, and supporting the Federal Relations team with administrative tasks.

Additionally, interns will have the opportunity to network with government leaders and UGA alumni working in the United States capital. This internship is open to UGA undergraduate and graduate students only and provides a stipend of $3,000. To receive the stipend, the selected student must be enrolled in at least one class.

The Washington Semester Program

Each fall and spring semester, UGA students have the unique opportunity to live, work and study in Washington, D.C. through the Washington Semester Program. The Washington Semester Program is the University’s only D.C.-based program open to all undergraduate students during the four-month academic semester.

Students selected for the Washington Semester Program:

  • Earn at least twelve hours of University of Georgia academic credit;
  • Work at least 30 hours per week in an internship related to their interests;
  • Live with other Washington Semester students in UGA’s Delta Hall;
  • Connect with leaders in public policy, government, and business; and
  • Experience the art and culture of one of the world’s great cities.

Honors in Washington Internship Program

Interns and staff from the Honors in Washington Internship Program pose for a photo.Each summer, the Honors in Washington Internship Program awards 16 second- or third-year Honors students housing at Delta Hall and a $1,500 stipend to support their participation in a variety of internships in the Washington, D.C. area. The program also holds a number of evening events that help students network with area alumni and clarify their academic and professional goals. Students can receive academic credit from their internship or an approved Honors internship course.

Grady Summer in DC

Each summer, students enrolled at Grady College of Mass Communication have the opportunity to live, work and study through the Grady D.C. Field Study and Internship Program. Participants enroll in courses and work in intern positions. Students live in Delta Hall while participating in the program.

Congressional Agricultural Fellowship

The UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and various Congressional Offices are pleased to offer summer fellowship opportunities in Washington D.C. for students in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Fellows are offered a stipend and have the opportunity to attend agriculture committee hearings; prepare briefs; conduct agricultural policy research; meet with constituents; and earn 3 semester credit hours toward an undergraduate degree.
