Research at the University of Georgia led to 50 new products being introduced to the market in fiscal year 2018, ranking UGA No. 2 among all U.S. universities and colleges for this important metric. This is the sixth year in a row that UGA has ranked among the Top 5 universities—including a No. 1 ranking for FY2017. This ranking is based on annual survey data from AUTM, a nonprofit organization that tracks technology transfer activity in higher education.

UGA’s Innovation District Takes Shape
America’s rise to become an economic powerhouse coincided with its leadership in turning scientific discoveries into new technologies. In recent decades, however, the application of scientific knowledge into new solutions has lagged, at least in part, because of a disconnect between academic discoveries and industry development, according to a 2019 report from the National Bureau of Economic Research. The University of Georgia is aiming to help close the gap between academic discoveries and real-world solutions through its Innovation District initiative.
